No Plane Ticket Required

For anyone who needs a vacation but has fifteen minutes instead

(Click the audio above for a short preview. Paid subscribers, your full meditation is ready for you. Recorded at home, unedited. A few stumbles, a little background noise. I hope you enjoy.)

I was talking with a student before class this week. We got onto the subject of dream vacations. Hers was on a boat in Greece — sun, water, and those gorgeous blues. Mine was a big landscape, on foot. Mountains, maybe. Somewhere with a lot of nature to explore.

Neither of us was going anywhere particularly interesting that day. But we did have our mats, a small part of our house and the same morning hour we always have.

She brought the sun, the blue, and the ocean’s tides with her. I brought wide open spaces, with time and space to explore. I found myself walking through my own body the way I’d walk a landscape. Up through the legs. Across the ridge of the hips. Down the long slope of the spine.

Neither of us left the room. But both of us, in some way, got where we wanted to go.

That’s what we’re doing today in our practice. Not a visualization. Not pretending you’re somewhere else. Just paying the kind of attention to your body that you might pay to a place you’d traveled a long way to see.

A body holiday. No plane ticket required.

Let’s get comfortable and then we’ll begin.
