I sent out an essay this week by email, The Belly We Were Told To Hide. Later on in the week, in one of our yoga classes, we had a nice discussion about the topic and how we have had similar experiences to each other.
Many of us have spent a lot of years receiving messages about our bodies. From the outside. From magazines, from comments people made when we were young, from the media culture, to comparing ourselves to others. And after a while, those messages start to feel like our own thoughts. Like they came from us. As if they are true.
But here’s what I keep coming back to: most of what we think about our bodies wasn’t something we decided. It was handed to us. And we’ve been carrying it ever since.
So today we’re going to practice getting curious. Not to try to fix anything, or talk ourselves into feeling differently than we do. Rather, just practice being curious about what’s actually here. In this body. Right now. From the inside.
That’s it. That’s the whole practice.
Simple. Will you join us?
