The Things We Stop Noticing

A guided mindfulness meditation on the quiet, ordinary things that hold us

(Click the audio above to listen to the full meditation. Recorded at home, unedited. A few stumbles, a little background noise. I hope you enjoy.)

Yesterday, I was outside watering my new seedlings in my garden just a quiet, ordinary morning task…and the hose went dry.

No warning, just... nothing.

And my first reaction was this little spike of panic. Because we’re on a well, and when the water stops, your mind immediately goes to the worst-case scenario.

I stood there holding a limp hose, already running through what this might mean, what it might cost, how long it might take to fix — and then I caught myself.

Because it turned out to be nothing serious. A simple explanation, easily sorted.

But what stayed with me was how fast my mind moved. One second, watering seedlings. The next, catastrophizing… all because something I completely took for granted had suddenly become unavailable.

Running water. I never think about running water. Until it’s gone.

And that got me thinking about all the things that are just... here. Quietly, reliably here. That we move through without noticing, because they’ve never given us any reason to notice them.

So that’s where we’re going this morning.
Not a big dramatic gratitude practice.
Just a quiet look around at what’s still here.

So, get comfortable, and let’s begin…
